The end of the line. The last dot on the map. We’d done Glasgow to Hong Kong overland and our money was spent (a total of £5,000 each, that’s 10 months at a grand a month for two not particularly thrifty travelers).
Three weeks earlier however, lying awake in a frozen Chinese hotel room, we had vowed to find a tropical beach before going anywhere near a plane back to the UK. We found £30 flights to the Philippines online and suddenly all we had to do was sit out 3 weeks on a beach and our initial plan of meeting Helen’s brother Dan when he arrived in Hong Kong in March was back on.
Needless to say the Philippines didn’t disappoint. Northern Palawan does indeed live up the guide book claim of ‘as stunning as Thailand and nobody there’. (See Eddie and Jack’s www.taophilippines.com for the only way to travel the best bits round there.)
Back in Hong Kong we had a few days with Dan - saw the sights, ate the food and after bumping into friend from uni who wisely left science for banking, we sampled Hong Kong’s 40th floor cocktail bars. Cheers Mekhail.
Then we flew home. Sitting next to a grey faced commuter on the Gatwick train I wondered what I would say if he asked me how my holiday had been. Luckily he didn’t, he fell asleep instead.
